Summer Term Orientation

Summer Term Orientation is for students admitted to begin at UT Austin in summer academic term. Students attending Summer Term, including first term, second term and nine-week term, are required to participate in Summer Term Orientation in order to register for classes. 

Summer Term Orientation will take place completely virtually in May.

Summer Term admits are required to take classes during the first, nine-week, second, or full summer term. 

Before Orientation

Registration and Dates

Summer Term Orientation will take place in May before classes start. Registration will open Spring 2026.

You must be an admitted student, accepted your offer of admission on MyStatus and have satisfied your enrollment deposit in order to register for orientation.

If you need to cancel your orientation registration, you must do so by the session's registration close date. Please note that if you cancel your orientation session, a $25 non-refundable charge will be assessed and deducted from your refund amount, if you have already paid for your orientation session.

Log in to MyUT and Download the App

Download the MyUT app and take advantage of personalized features like the orientation schedule, registration information, financial aid, announcements and more. 

Secure Housing Early

Complete the housing application as soon as possible after you finish your admissions application. The earlier you apply, the more likely you are to have your preferences met. 

If you are planning to live off-campus, please utilize the Off-Campus website to access the apartment search portal, specially designed for UT Austin students to find great leases, roommates and list sublet opportunities.

Submit Proof of Required Immunizations

Students new to UT Austin registering for their first term and readmitted students. You MUST comply with all applicable medical clearance requirements. Students cannot register for classes until they satisfy all requirements. Visit the Healthyhorns website for more information on how to submit your required immunizations.

Set up Duo Two-Factor Authentication

For security purposes, the University requires that you setup Duo Authentication in order to utilize all UT accounts such as MyStatus, MyUT, UT Zoom, Canvas and the orientation registration system. If you are receiving an error message that says “you are not enrolled due to the Multi-factor Duo Authentication,” you must set up Duo authentication

Steps to Set Up Duo

  • Visit bit.ly/utduo
  • Log in using your UT EID and password.
  • Follow the instructions to register your device.
  • Download the Duo Mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to your device.

Check Your Email Address

Each student receives an official UT Austin email address in the Microsoft 365 system with the suffix “@my.utexas.edu” when they become a current student. This official email address will be listed in each student’s record as their primary email. You should have received an email alerting you when your official student email is ready for setup.

Request Accommodations (if applicable)

If you have a disability and need accommodations, you will indicate that when you register for your orientation session. You may indicate the need for the following accommodations:

  • Interpreting or captioning services
  • Housing Accommodations
  • Mobility Accommodations

After you register for your session, an email will be sent to you from Longhorn Orientation to confirm your specific accommodation needs. Additional instructions about any required forms or supporting documentation will be included. Any supporting documentation must be submitted at least two weeks before your session.

Please note, accommodation requests made for orientation do not apply to the academic year. If you need accommodations during the academic year, you should contact Disability and Access (D&A). For information on how to register with D&A, click here.

Complete International Student Requirements (if applicable)

Incoming international students must register for a Longhorn Orientation. In addition to Longhorn Orientation, international students are required to complete the check-in process with Texas Global . You will not be able to register for classes until you have attended a Longhorn Orientation session AND completed the check-in process with Texas Global. You will also have an additional International Student Orientation available to you.

Set Up UT Zoom Account

You will need the most updated Zoom version and an official UT Zoom account to complete orientation. Follow this link to set up Zoom on your mobile device or computer.

Upgrade Your UT EID and Get Your Student ID

To upgrade your EID or verify you already have, go to UT Online EID Upgrade Application Guidelines and select Upgrade My EID.

Upgrading your UT EID allows you to claim your financial aid and conduct University business online. 

To obtain your UT ID Card, follow these steps:

  • Submit your ID Card Photo online here.
  • Wait for email confirmation stating your card is printed and ready for pick up.
  • Visit the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) to pick up your ID Card.
    • You can wait until you are on campus for Longhorn Orientation or the start of the term to pick up your UT ID Card.

UT ID Cards cost $20 and payment can be made via What-I-Owe.

Review Assessments Placement Test Information

UT Math Assessment

College of Natural Sciences first-year freshman students, regardless of AP or IB high school credit, must take the UT Math Assessment (UTMA) before their orientation session. Some students in other colleges must also take the UTMA, including students planning to take Calculus I (M408C/K/N/R) that do not meet the exemption requirements for non-CNS. Non-CNS students can wait until after discussing their course selection with an academic advisor at orientation to take the UTMA. You must purchase the online Math Readiness Package that will provide online learning modules and the proctored assessment.

The College of Natural Sciences, which oversees the assessment process for students in all colleges and schools, offers additional information, including exemption criteria and test registration details, on their UTMA website.

UT Exam for M305G (Pre-Calculus) Credit 

If you do not plan to take a calculus course but still need a math credit to complete your degree, you may have the opportunity to take the UT Exam for M305G (Pre-Calculus Credit). 

If your degree plan allows credit for M 305G (a pre-calculus course), you have the option of testing out of the course with an eligible score to take the UT Exam M305G (Pre-Calculus) Credit. For more information and to register, visit the Student Testing Services’ website. Results from these exams are available within 24-48 hours, in time for students who may need to adjust their fall schedules based on their results to do so during the add/drop period.

Chemistry Assessment

Students registering for CH 301 will be required to complete the Chemistry assessment prior to the Fall Term. The College of Natural Sciences requires students in certain majors to take the UT Chemistry Assessment before orientation. Please review the UTCA website for more information.

Placement Tests

Depending on your college, you may be required to take other placement tests or assessments. You will receive information from your college via email about any college-specific testing requirements.

If you need to take other placement tests, you may register online through Student Testing Services. Results from these exams are available within 24-48 hours, in time for students who may need to adjust their fall schedules based on their results to do so during the add/drop period.

Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

You can check your TSI status on your Registration Information Sheet (RIS). If you are exempt it will say "Exempt" or "Complete" on your RIS and there is no further action needed from you. If not, you will need to provide documentation of your exemption or present passing scores from the TSI Assessment before you can register for courses. For more information, email the TSI Office at tsi@austin.utexas.edu. Please allow the TSI office 6-10 business days to process your documentation.

Review College Credit

Students with credit-eligible Advanced Placement (AP), CLEP, SAT Subject Test, SAT/ACT Writing Scores or International Baccalaureate (IB) test score may find they have already earned coursework credit at UT Austin by taking exams. To learn more about what placement tests you should plan to take and when you can take them, visit Student Testing Services or call (512) 232-2662. Credit by exam information, including a list of accepted exams and scores and testing schedules for exams offered on campus can be found at testingservices.utexas.edu/credit.

Make sure you have any test scores (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, etc.) sent directly to UT Austin. It's helpful to gather all test scores and transcripts for completed college-level courses and have them with you during your advising appointment at orientation. Your advisor can still work with you to plan out your course selections even if some of your scores are still pending.

Review Orientation Schedule Information

Students can review orientation information, including a detailed schedule, in the MyUT app. This information will become available closer to your orientation session.

Prepare for Class Registration

Be sure to access your Registration Information Sheet no later than two weeks prior to your orientation session to ensure there are no holds that will prevent you from registering. 

NOTE: Your advising hold will be cleared at orientation. Your health hold will be cleared once you have submitted the appropriate documentation. If you have an international hold, that will be cleared once you have completed the check-in process with Texas Global. If you have a high school transcript hold, it will not prevent you from registering for classes.

Your Orientation

Orientation will include self-guided informational Canvas modules and a virtual interaction with your college or school for academic information and advising. 

The Canvas modules will become available in May to the students who have registered for Summer Term Orientation. Students who register after this date will be able to access the Canvas modules within 1-2 business days after they have completed registration and received a confirmation email. 

Once students have completed the Canvas modules, they can schedule an academic advising appointment with their college or school. Information on how to contact an academic advisor for your college will be shared within Canvas modules. Once you have met with your academic advisor, you will be eligible to register for courses during your next registration window.

Students are also invited to attend an optional in-person event, which will be announced closer to 2026 Summer Term Orientation. This event will consist of a small group meeting to learn about campus life, a campus tour, and evening social programs. Students interested in attending this event can register via their confirmation email or Canvas modules. A more detailed schedule will be provided closer to the date. This event is at no additional cost for Summer Term Orientation registrants.

Pay Your Tuition
  • Make sure you pay your tuition by 5 p.m. the day of your deadline so you don’t get dropped from your classes! More info on how to pay and payment deadlines can be found at Texas One Stop.
  • If you are paying with financial aid, learn more about the process with Texas One Stop.
Set up eProxy (if applicable)

The eProxy System allows students to authorize someone who has obtained a UT EID to make web payments, view financial aid awards and status, view tuition bills, view and pay housing bills, add funds to Dine In Dollars or Bevo Pay accounts and view Dine In Dollars balance and transactions. Note: An eProxy account is required to make payments submitted by anyone other than the enrolled student. You can learn more and set-up eProxy at eproxy.utexas.edu.

Submit Your Final Transcripts
All final official transcripts must be received before classes begin. If you attended a Texas public high school with access to TREx, please send electronic transcripts. If TREx is not an option, send transcripts via Parchment (Naviance/Edocs), Common App (if you applied via Common App), Scoir, GreenLight or paper transcripts in the mail. Complete Health and Well-Being Modules

Mental Health and Well-Being Modules, AlcoholEdu and Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates are mandatory online educational programs that all incoming students must complete. The program's goals are to ensure that UT Austin students have information to make well-informed decisions about substance use and are empowered to prevent sexual assault and interpersonal violence.

You will receive an email with a link to the program website prior to the start of the term where you will log in with your UT EID and password to complete the program, which has two parts. If you do not complete both Parts 1 and 2 by the deadlines, you will not be able to see your grades online for that term. Make Changes to Your Class Schedule (if applicable)

You can only make changes to your schedule during the official add/drop period. You can check your Registration Information Sheet to see when your next registration window opens.

Get Ready for Mooov-In or Secure Off-Campus Housing

Review the Mooov-In website from University Housing and Dining for complete information about Mooov-In for the fall, and read through the Residence Hall Safety Page and Manual.

For students who plan to live off campus, the Off-Campus Living Resources website has helpful information, including the Off-Campus Housing Marketplace.

Plan Your Commute to Campus (if applicable)

If you're planning to have a car on campus, Parking and Transportation Services provides information on the different kinds of parking permits available and how you can purchase one.

There are also many university buses that travel to and from campus, as well as city buses that travel all over the city. UT students, faculty and staff may ride CapMetro mainline buses for free by swiping a valid UT photo ID upon entering the bus.

If you have health insurance and/or a prescription card, make sure you have it with you on campus. If you don’t have health insurance, learn more about the Student Health Insurance Plan, an affordable health, dental, and vision plan approved by the UT System.

Here are a few easy steps you can take right now:

  • Make sure you are subscribed to Campus Text Alerts to receive text messages during emergency situations that may effect the University.
  • Complete the emergency contact form online.
  • Download the LiveSafe App. UTPD uses this free mobile app to give the UT community and guests immediate access to police dispatch. UTPD hopes the app will encourage users to engage and share important, potentially life-saving information, to prevent crime and enable better incident response.

Visit maps.utexas.edu and mark where all your classes are. This will make it easier to find your way around once classes begin! 

Research Options for Purchasing Textbooks

You may want to wait until classes begin to purchase books, but you can start looking into where to purchase them now. There are many online options, including the University Co-op. You can also look into e-books or renting. 

Participate in Longhorn Welcome

Longhorn Welcome is UT Austin's official welcome week to new students and starts the week before classes begin for the fall term. 

Students attending Spring Orientation, should plan to attend Spring Welcome during the first week of the Spring Term.
